"Perhaps no other breed can boast such a colorful history of association with, and service to, mankind through as many centuries
as can the Greta Pyrenees, Le Grande Chiendres Montagnes, Montago, Le Grande Chiendes Mont, or as he is known in England and on the continent, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog"
(From the "Complete Dog Book", Official Publication of the American Kennel Club, 20th edition)

To add to the above quote, there have been found preserved skeletal remains of the Great Pyrenees breed in fossil deposits dating back to the Bronze Age, 1800-1000 BC. As their history was researched by caring folks who saw these big white dogs at work in Europe, the breed was carefully promoted and preserved. One of the greatest attributes of this breed, both historically and presently, is their flexibility to serve in a variety of settings. Although their most well known place setting is in the mountains with the livestock, they were equally as appreciated and effective living in the French palaces guarding the nobility there.  In America today, they live happily and healthfully in north Montana and in south Georgia, and on a 2500 section ranch in Texas or a Chicago suburb with a 1/2 acre fenced in back yard and large house full of children !
